What is Female Genital Mutilation?
Female Genital Mutilation, according to WHO, refers to all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
FGM is not only traumatic but highly dangerous and often leads to life-long pain and suffering, or even death, for girls who are subjected to the procedure.
Opposition to FGM focuses on human rights violations, lack of informed consent, and health risks, which include fatal hemorrhaging, epidermoid cysts, recurrent urinary and vaginal infections, chronic pain, and obstetrical complications.
